Canterbury Marlowe Day 2018

Canterbury Marlowe Day 2018 will once boast an exciting programme of academic and theatrical speakers, including the great actor Frank Barrie, who played his first Shakespearean role in 1959. The day will also include the traditional laying of a floral tribute at the Marlowe Memorial outside the New Marlowe Theatre. Full details of the day’s itinerary and how to purchase tickets will be announced shortly.

10:00 Gather for coffee. 

10.30 Welcome and memorial ceremony.  The Marlowe Society Chairman Ken Pickering welcomes members to Canterbury Marlowe Day and a memorial ceremony

11:00 ‘The Faery Queen’. The Marlowe Consort play music from ‘The Faery Queen’

11:15 ‘Acting Shakespeare’. A presentation by renowned actor Frank Barrie

12:15 ‘The Faery Queen Part II’. The Marlowe Consort return to play music from ‘The Faery Queen’

12:30 Lunch break. 

14:00 ‘Grotowski directs Faustus’. A presentation on Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski’s remarkable production of Dr. Faustus by Paul Allain (Professor of Theatre and Performance at the University of Kent)

15:00 ‘Directing Edward II’. Following a sell-out run at The Tristan Bates Theatre in 2017, the Lazarus Theatre Company’s Edward II became the first production in their current year-long residency at The Greenwich Theatre. Lazarus director Ricky Dukes discusses Edward II with Dr. Geoff Doel and Dr. Joanna Labon.

Prices and How To Pay

Both members of the Society and non-members are welcome to attend. Places for the full day are priced £15 for members, £18 for non-members and £10 for students. Places can be booked by sending a cheque (payable to “The Marlowe Society”) together with your details and the required number of places, to our Treasurer, Charles Cox by Tuesday 16 May at the very latest. Alternatively you can pay via internet bank transfer (our bank account details are on the Joining page), or via PayPal using the relevant “Buy Now” button below. For internet bank transfers, please also send an accompanying e-mail note to the Treasurer to provide your details and the payment made.

Marlowe Day is held in the city of Canterbury, where of course Marlowe was born, grew up, and attended the King’s School. The day will be spent inside the spectacular Marlowe Theatre, which is located on The Friars off from the High Street (see map), not too far from Westgate and Canterbury West station (which now has the highspeed rail link to/from London St Pancras).

Note that lunch is not provided as part of the ticket price.

Optional Members’ Lunch at the Waterfront Brasserie

Water Lane Brasserie (next to the Marlowe Kit) can provide lunch for Society members on the day. There are three options available:

  1. Vegetarian or vegan soup with a home made crusty roll or
  2. Vegetarian quiche with salad or
  3. Coronation Chicken baguette

The cost is £6 per head which is payable on the day.
